How to Plan Your Tomodachi Life Island Layout

  1. Step 1: Choose your grid size ā€” 12Ɨ12 for compact islands, 16Ɨ16 for standard layouts, or 20Ɨ20 for spacious designs.
  2. Step 2: Select a building from the palette and click on the grid to place it. Right-click any cell to erase.
  3. Step 3: Use the Resident Optimizer tab to add your island residents and generate MBTI-based placement suggestions.

You can place 12 types of buildings and decorations, optimize resident placement using MBTI personality compatibility, and export your design as a PNG image or JSON file. It works for both the original 3DS game and Living the Dream on Nintendo Switch.

How does the MBTI Resident Optimizer work?

The optimizer uses the same 16-personality compatibility algorithm as our MBTI calculator. When you add residents with their personality types, it calculates romance and friendship scores between all pairs. It then suggests placing high-compatibility residents in adjacent buildings to maximize positive in-game interactions.

Can I use this planner for Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream?

Yes. The planner is designed for both the original Tomodachi Life (3DS) and Living the Dream (Nintendo Switch). Living the Dream features an open island setting, so the 20Ɨ20 grid size is recommended for capturing the expanded layout possibilities.

How do I save and load my island layout?

Your layout is automatically saved to your browser localStorage as you work. You can also export it as a JSON file using the "Save Layout" button, and re-import it later using the "Import Layout" button. The PNG export creates a shareable image of your island design.

What building types are available in the planner?

The palette includes 12 types: House, Apartment, Cafe, Shop, Park, Fountain, Restaurant, Observation Tower, Beach Access, Bridge, Tree, and Flower Bed. Each is represented by a distinct color and icon on the grid for easy visual identification.

Does the island planner work offline?

Yes. After the page loads, all planning, optimization, and export features work entirely in your browser. No internet connection is required. Your data stays on your device ā€” there are no servers, databases, or tracking.

Can I share my island layout with friends?

Yes. Export your layout as a PNG image to share visually, or as a JSON file that friends can import into the planner to view and edit. The JSON format preserves all building positions and grid settings for full fidelity.

How many residents can I add to the optimizer?

The optimizer supports up to 15 residents, matching the capacity of our MBTI roster tool. The original Tomodachi Life supports up to 100 island residents, and Living the Dream is expected to support a similar capacity ā€” but 15 is sufficient for optimization planning since the algorithm focuses on your core cast.

Are there pre-made island layout templates?

Yes. The Layout Templates tab offers 6 pre-designed layouts: Romance District, Friendship Plaza, Balanced Community, Creative Quarter, Social Hub, and Nature Retreat. Click any template to load it into the grid planner, then customize it freely.
